With Bustang, commuting is as simple as saddling up to ride Colorado’s big purple bus. Working with a large team of local engineers and contractors for the master developer (Union Station Alliance), we implemented several noteworthy solutions for the space, including: the careful integration of an acoustic plaster ceiling, the subtle introduction of venting and exhaust systems, and the utilization of the iconic, heavy timber roof attics in the wing buildings to increase hotel room count. Bustang is CDOT's interregional express bus service, connecting major populations, employment centers and local transit entities along the I-25 and I-70 corridors. Our vision was to establish Union Station as “Denver’s Living Room”-a place that locals would frequent and gather beyond their transit needs. Prior to interior design and leasing, the team worked with a brand agency to determine the core messaging and pillars that Union Station would rest on. In particular, the vaulted ceiling (and associated terrible acoustics), the lack of smoke control for the Great Hall atrium space, and the limited availability of space for MEP systems presented critical obstacles to the development of this high-traffic retail, hospitality and Amtrak hub-especially when paired with maintaining a landmark designation for the property. Interior demolition occurred to provide a 112-key independent hotel, with associated restaurant uses and supplemental retail on the ground floor while accommodating the existing tenant needs and space requirements of Amtrak on the ground floor and lower level. There were several architectural challenges to overcome, including both those common to historic structures and a few unique hurdles. When we began this project in 2011, Union Station was a tired transit hub with little appeal or connection to Denver’s dynamic downtown culture.
